Ocean County Library Toms River Branch to Show South Football’s Impossible Dream

August 30, 2023

TOMS RIVER – The Ocean County Library cordially invites you to attend its screening of South Football’s Impossible Dream, the story of Toms River High School South’s rise to gridiron glory, and a discussion with producer Sandra Levine 6:30 PM Thursday, September 21 in the Toms River Branch.

South Football’s Impossible Dream chronicles the turnaround in fortune for the then-struggling team in the 1960s with the guidance of legendary Toms River coach Ron Signorino, Sr.

Coach Signorino’s challenge to his players to believe in “The Impossible Dream” inspired his team to find the guts and grit to reel off 19 consecutive victories and become a high school football powerhouse, ranked Number One in New Jersey.

The one-hour film features rare footage of the epic 1969 battle between the Toms River South Hitting Indians and the Middletown Lions. Dubbed “The Greatest Game Ever Played at the Jersey Shore,” the contest is credited with bringing Shore Conference Football to prominence.

In candid interviews, former players reveal the lasting impact that Coach Signorino has had on their lives throughout his career of more than 50 years.

Following the screening, attendees will be welcome to engage in questions and answers with producer and Jersey Shore native Sandra Levine, a 10-time regional Emmy nominee who has devoted more than 35 years to inspiring documentaries and feature stories.

Sandra’s account of northern Ocean County’s path to recovery in the two years following Superstorm Sandy, Heartbreak and Healing after Sandy, aired on NJTV and WHYY. Sandra Levine Productions also creates projects for higher education, nonprofit, and corporate clients.
